Dutch Snub For Van Nistelrooy As Robben Returns To The Squad.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy has been snubbed by Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk ahead of the home and away Euro 2012 Qualifiers against Hungary.

Van Nistelrooy still has a chance of making the cut if Huntelaar fails to be fit in time.

Veteran striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy has been dropped out of the Dutch squad by Bert van Marwijk for the upcoming matches against Hungary. However it seems like the former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker might get a second chance, depending on Klaas Jan Huntelaar's fitness

Schalke striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar is struggling to be fit for next Friday's clash against Hungary in Budapest and the return fixture four days later in Amsterdam. Despite Ruud Van Nistelrooy being overlooked in selecting the original squad, van Marwijk hinted that Van Nistelrooy could get the call if Huntelaar fails to be fit in time.

He said: ''I spoke with Ruud and he knows that he is in the picture for the Euro 2012 finals but that doesn't mean I will invite him for every match. But if the situation changes Ruud will be the first to know.''

On Huntelaar, Van Marwijk added: ''Klaas Jan will be in Noordwijk on Monday and then we will see if he is ready for both matches.''

One bright news for Holland is the return of Arjen Robben for the first time since last summer's World Cup. Robben has struggled with injuries this season but made a return into the Bayern Munish squad recently. His impressive displays has now led to Van Marwijk inserting him back into the Dutch fold.

''Robben is one of the best strikers in the world so it's obvious I am glad he is back,'' added Van Marwijk.

Patrice Evra has admitted that he will forever 'live with the scar' of his role in France's dismal showings in last summers FIFA World Cup although he is determine to make up for it.

The Manchester United left-back was the captain of France during last summer's World Cup where they were massively hit some internal crisis within the team. He was then subsequently suspended for five games following his role in France's overwhelming scene of indiscipline.

However, the French defender was finally called up by Laurent Blanc last week after a nine-month exodus from the French National Team. While Evra insisted that he will forever be ashamed of that incident in South Africa, he is determined to do his best for the Les Blues from now onwards.

''Besides, I have been very well received (back into) the group. Until the World Cup, I had always behaved well. I do not think any of you had heard that Evra was creating problems.

''I think I shall always live with that scar, but I want to go ahead and build a new story, much better than the previous. I want to be a solution, not a problem.''

'I do not want my supporters not want (to view) me as has been written. I want to be seen as someone who wants to invest for the future. As a single player, without status.''

Confirmation of Evra's recall to Blanc's squad was followed by a meeting between the two, which the United defender claimed was ''a beautiful and frank discussion''.

The bans on the three cricketers should act as a strong check against corruption, says Haroon Lorgat

The ICC is "satisfied" with the verdict and punishments handed out to three Pakistan players on Saturday on charges of spot-fixing during the Lord's Test last summer. A three-member tribunal found Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir guilty of offences under article 2 of the ICC's anti-corruption code and banned them for 10, 7 and 5 years respectively. Haroon Lorgat, the ICC's chief executive, hoped that as a result of the ICC's investigation and the subsequent hearing, the game's image would improve.

In the aftermath of the sanctions, questions were raised over why no life bans were handed out to any of the players, which would've been the maximum sanction for the relevant charges. The ICC's legal team is also believed to have pushed for those.

The tribunal also included the possibility of suspended sentences in the cases of Butt and Asif, of 5 and 2 years respectively, which means they could be out for as few as five years. Considering the ages of a couple of the players - Butt is 26 and Amir just 18 - in theory, they could return after serving their bans, though that remains a considerably distant prospect, especially given that they still have to deal with a criminal case in the UK.

"My first reaction is one of sadness at the fact that we had to go through such an ordeal but I am satisfied we have concluded it," Lorgat said at a press conference in Doha. "I'm also satisfied that the sanctions delivered are severe enough to send out a clear message that the ICC will not stop short at anything to prosecute any player found wanting in this area of corruption. I don't believe the sentences are lenient by any stretch of the imagination."

Lorgat added that he thought the sentences "will make it extremely difficult for them to return to the Test format. It is at the prime of their careers that they are faced with punishment. I don't want to speculate what may happen in future."

The tribunal's statement raised a couple of questions - answers to which will no doubt come if and when the full judgment appears. The recommendation to the ICC of a change in certain aspects of the code and sanctions left Amir and Butt - as seen in the statement of their lawyers - feeling that they could have received lower punishments than they did had the code allowed it. The implication, Amir's lawyer Shahid Karim felt, was a change to that code might benefit Amir.

But Lorgat said the ICC wasn't bound to the recommendation to change, only to consider it. "We would be open-minded to all recommendations put forward. This particular code was substantially rewritten and came into effect in October 2009. This is the first instance we have of provisionally suspending players and working through a case so whatever learnings come out of it we will consider. As far as I understand, it is not binding from a legal perspective."

The other broad concern has been the programme of education prescribed to Butt and Asif has been left under the auspices of the PCB, an administration that has only recently been given warnings by the ICC to put its house in order. But the emergence of the ICC's Pakistan task team (PTT), believes Lorgat, should help matters. "The PCB has made remarkable strides in the last few months in supporting the zero tolerance approach we espouse. We will do everything possible to support them, working together with them through the PTT."

The ICC's role in the investigation, Lorgat said, proved their seriousness in protecting the game's integrity. "It's a fact that this is a kind of incident we don't want to see in the game, but equally, with the speed with which we have got to this point, the hope is that people realised we are serious about maintaining our integrity and we will do everything to protect that. I hope as a result of what has transpired yesterday the image of the game has improved."

The ICC has taken unprecedented action against the three players

Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir have been banned for 10, 7 and 5 years respectively after an ICC tribunal found them guilty of spot-fixing stemming from the Lord's Test against England last year. The sanctions against Butt and Asif have five and two years suspended, which means that the trio cannot play any official, sanctioned cricket, international or domestic, for a minimum of five years, until September 2015.

The suspended sentences on Butt and Asif have been made conditional on their making no further breaches of the code and participating in an anti-corruption education programme, under the auspices of the PCB.

Butt, who was captain during the series in England, received the maximum sentence but one charge against him - of batting out a maiden over during the Oval Test - was dismissed. However, he was found to have not disclosed an approach by Majeed that he should bat the maiden over. The other charges that were upheld relate to the subsequent Lord's Test, where Amir and Asif were found to have bowled deliberate no-balls and Butt was penalized for being party to that. Amir will appeal against the decision to the Court of Arbitration Sports, but the other two players have not yet said whether they will.

The announcement on Saturday evening followed a day of deliberations in Doha between the three-man tribunal - comprising the head Michael Beloff QC, Sharad Rao and Justice Albie Sachs - the players and their legal teams and the ICC's lawyers. The three players began the day requesting the tribunal for a deferral of any verdict, in light of the statement on Friday by the UK's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that the players might also face criminal charges relating to the Lord's Test as the result of a separate investigation carried out by British police. The players, who continued to maintain their innocence, argued that a judgment today by the tribunal could be prejudicial to any criminal trial in the UK, but the request was rejected.

The length of the sentences may be considered surprising to the extent that at least one life ban had been predicted beforehand. Now, in theory, the 26-year-old Butt could return after five years if he complies with the conditions of the verdict. Amir, who will only turn 19 in April, could also conceivably harbour hopes of a return, though in practical terms a five-year gap from any competitive cricket makes the prospect of a return that much more difficult. The situation is most bleak for Asif, who will be 33 by the time the minimum five years are up.

It must also be noted that not until the full judgment is released will the picture become fully clear, especially with regards to the nature of the rehabilitation programme they must undertake and the role the PCB will have in that. The tribunal asked the ICC to publish the full judgment as soon as possible and it is expected to happen tomorrow. The question, however, of whether or not the full judgment may be deemed prejudicial to any criminal proceedings in the UK still looms.

A member of the ICC legal team told ESPNcricinfo that it is "very happy with the fact that the players were convicted." But given that the governing body was pushing for maximum sanctions, there will be at least a tinge of disappointment within the governing body.

The tribunal also recommended that the ICC make "certain changes to the code with a view to providing flexibility in relation to minimum sentences in exceptional circumstances." The lawyers of Butt and Amir later said that the tribunal would've given lower punishments had their hands not "been tied" to the code's range of sanctions.

News of the World, the tabloid that broke the spot-fixing story this summer, released a statement of its own, saying that "it is now clear to everyone in the game that corruption will not be tolerated," and added that it will continue to assist the police in any way it can.

A number of Pakistani fans waited outside the Qatar Financial Centre, some for the entire nine-hour duration of the proceedings, and gave vociferous support to the players when they eventually came out. Amir, in fact, was mobbed and had to return inside the building briefly.

Steve Waugh, who led Australia to victory in the 1999 World Cup, has said Australia are in with a chance to defend their World Cup crown despite inconsistent results since the start of 2010. He claimed India and Sri Lanka will be strong contenders but didn't rule out Ricky Ponting's team. "Australia have an outside chance because they have matchwinners," Waugh said at an event in Mumbai. "I don't think this is a weaker Australian side.

"It's tough decision (to predict a winner). There are seven sides capable of winning but the side that has the momentum going into the quarter-final will be good. India are the slight favourites, as they know the conditions well and will have fantastic support. Sri Lanka have a very good chance too."

It might come as no surprise for Waugh to back the defending champions on a day when Australia pulled off their highest chase in ODIs, against England in Sydney. Australia had pocketed the seven-game series last week, and their dominant form in the ODIs after a humiliating Ashes drubbing only made Waugh confident about his countrymen. "Australia are still ranked No.1 in the world. In [Shaun] Tait, [Mitchell] Johnson and [Brett] Lee, they have the potential matchwinners. Their batsmen are also on top. Ricky is coming back from injury. Australian players are best when faced with adversity," Waugh said.

Austrlia's winning percentage in 2010 in ODIs had taken a beating: of the 25 matches played, spread over seven series, they won 16 and lost eight including the series defeat to Sri Lanka at home. But the return to form of seniors like Michael Clarke and Lee, along with the matchwinning capabilities of Shane Watson, makes Australia a dangerous opponent. Waugh, a two-time World Cup winner including one as captain in 1999, said Lee would be the lynchpin for Australia. Lee returned for the England series after sitting out from October 2009 due to lingering elbow injury. But Lee has not compromised on pace and so far is the highest wicket-taker in the series with 11 wickets at an average of 24 in the six matches. "Lee will be my impact player. He has amazing resilience, he is bowling back at 150kph and he loves touring India" Waugh said.

In the two World Cups held in the subcontinent (1987 and '96), Australia have won 12 of the 15 matches they've played.

Akhtar returned back to international cricket with a three wicket haul and ensured that the side would benefit from his return as the Lankans were throttled thanks to that. at the other end, Afridi's century was one of the best in the business, but his untimely cramping meant that the side was in deep trouble by the time he was sent back.

India, on the other hand, showed signs of rustiness in the early part of the game when they bowled, but came back well to overcome the Bangladeshi batsmen. However, they will need to be careful of the manner in which they bowl, as the stronger teams in Sri Lanka and Pakistan will not spare the Indian bowlers as lightly as the Bangladeshis did.

Against Pakistan, it will be interesting to see whether the Indians try out something different if they bowl first. Zaheer and co. did not seem to be getting much help from the wicket in the early part of the Bangladesh game, but it must also be said that they lacked rhythm.

The good thing from India's point of view is that Zaheer Khan usually gets better as he bowls more and more, and one can expect him to make a comeback against Pakistan. Praveen Kumar did swing the ball around, but it was, rather surprisingly, the spinners who did well.

The battle to look forward to will be the one between Harbhajan Singh and Shahid Afridi, both of whom would love to have a go against each other. Afridi had already shown that he can take on Muralitharan, and he will look to do the same against Bhajji as well. It remains to be seen how well Harbhajan and India respond to that onslaught.

England vs USA Match Preview

Saturday’s high profile match between England and USA inevitably invokes comparisons with the famous 1-0 loss the English suffered against the Americans in Brazil in 1950. Sixty years is a long time and much has changed in football. Yet its still goals that count. Can USA snatch another shock victory over England?

The big match of Group C gets underway Saturday when England take on USA in a battle between the teams widely expected to finish 1-2 in the Group.

The England squad is packed with top class players, in particular Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, and midfielders Frank Lampard of Chelsea and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool.

But although the USA lacks the man for man quality of the English, they are not without players of skill and creativity themselves.

Midfielder Landon Donovan of the LA Galaxy is undoubtedly the most high profile of the Americans. His successful10 game loan to English Premier League club Everton earlier this year surely proved even to his most zealous detractors that he can compete among the top teams and players.

Striker Clint Dempsey, who plies his trade in England with Fulham, is another American whose talents are obvious. And goalkeeper Tim Howard has proven time and again that he is a fine stopper for his English club Everton.

Central defense: England and USA have problems in common

England central defender and captain Rio Ferdinand injured his knee on the training ground last week in what seemed an innocuous challenge. He was soon ruled out of the World Cup as a result and England boss Fabio Capello called up Tottenham’s Michael Dawson to replace him.

Despite a good season at the club level, Dawson lacks international experience and so the primary responsibilities for central defense will fall to Tottenham’s talented Ledley King. Though a fine defender, King is fragile, with chronic knee problems.

Central defense is problematic for the USA too. Oguchi Onyewu of AC Milan is coming off a knee problem that has kept him out of the game since late last year. Only in recent weeks has “Gooch” started playing again and his lack of match fitness was initially clear. Still, he claims now to ready for 90 minutes against England. Whether his knee is ready only time will tell.

He’s a big lad, Onyewu, and his readiness for a physical battle may be tested if he has to face the likes of stout England striker Emile Heskey whose physical presence can be imposing. But Onyewu will likely find himself at a greater disadvantage against the pace of England’s small men, Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon or Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Knowledge of the venue may help the Americans

USA may have a small advantage due to their playing experience in South Africa. They competed there in last year’s Confederations Cup, losing in the final to Brazil. They’ve even played in Rustenburg's Royal Bafokeng Stadium, the venue for Saturday match with England.

Nevertheless, any experiential advantage gained through playing in South Africa is far outweighed by the quality of the England squad. Still, USA boss Bob Bradley and his men are confident.

"It's certainly a big challenge but that's what we're there for. It will be a very special start to the tournament with us playing England -- a team we know very well,” said Bradley, speaking in December after the World Cup draw was announced. "We can be dangerous against very good teams. We feel that this is a group that gives us a very fair chance to get through to the next round."

Rooney is a passionate fellow,…can opponents take advantage?

Much has been made of the possibility that England’s opponents might resort to “winding up” tactics to put Wayne Rooney off his game. The sly kick when the ref’s attention is elsewhere, or casual observations on the behavioral characteristics of female family members are de rigueur in today's game,…perhaps Monsieur Zidane would confirm this.

Yet young master Rooney has matured, and such abuses are unlikely madden him as once they might have. Fabio Capello, however, is taking no chances. According to team captain Steven Gerrard, Capello has called for his players to maintain control, especially with respect to communicating with the referees.

Rooney’s high profile sending-off against Portugal four years ago makes him an obvious focus of his opponents’ attentions and the manager’s admonitions, as does his booking for verbal abuse of a referee in a match against a team of locals earlier this week.

Rooney's history of inelegant responses during heated moments may well be why the Brazilian referee for Saturday’s match is said to be honing his understanding of English insults. But if he wants to have a clue to the meaning of Rooney-isms as passions rise he should be honing his understanding of Scouse.

By relegating Jonas Gutierrez to the defense Maradona frees another offensive place, which is occupied by Carlos Tevez for the moment: He is the striker with most experience in the National Team and people's favorite. Messi's lack of results have turned the Argentineans against him, and the pressure of having to make things right might be too much for such a young player.

Saturday morning will have the Albiceleste with Maradona back in a world championship after more than a decade. Argentina's new generation will be welcomed in Africa by a team determined to retain what is theirs against the second most expensive formation in South Africa.

Lars Lagerback has already tasted Argentinean blood 8 years ago, when he eliminated the Albicelestes in 2002, back in his days as Swedish coach. This will be their fourth world championship, having missed the last World Cup for the first time in 16 years.

Nigeria responds to the classic African style: solid defenders in the middle of the field and strikers light as feathers. Chelsea's John Obi Mikel is the key player in this team, for his position as defensive midfielder and his long field of view and witness creates a center from where creation can flow. Lagerback's assistant Roland Andersson warned Nigeria's coach about Argentina's weak spot: its defense. Both players lack of match fitness as a result of their irregular first team appearances in club football.

Consequently, Coach Otto Rehhagel may have to look at other options for his starting XI sheet ahead of Greece’s 2010 World Cup opener against Greece. Adding to this concern is the confirmed exclusion of key defender Vangelis Moras from Saturday’s clash. Subsequent to an injury he sustained during training earlier in June, Moras was expected to recover in time to play for his country on June 12.

This couldn’t happen though, and Vangelis Moras commentated on his own status, stating:

“I am not ready. There’s no need to take a risk. It would be too risky to do that [play] in such a crucial match. I will now try to get fit for the second game against Nigeria.”

Chelsea v Blackburn English Premier League Match Preview

The attention in London will switch from the Champions League to the English Premier League as Wednesday's big winners Chelsea resume their domestic campaign.

Two defeats in three Premier League games have let Chelsea slip from first to second in the standings.

But on Saturday afternoon, the Blues will have the chance to reach the top of the table with a victory against Blackburn Rovers at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea – more concentration in defense will offer victory

Carlo Ancelotti’s men negatively looked different in defense against both Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa in October this month.

Chelsea’s play didn’t only lack of creativity in every part of the field, but also of concentration at the back especially.

After their 2-1 loss against Aston Villa last weekend, Carlo Ancelotti bemoaned his side’s defensive mistakes:

"We lost the game because we had two set plays. We need to be more focused on the situation.

"We want to do better for sure. We need more concentration."

Speaking to The Daily Mail last week, Chelsea’s boss Carlo Ancelotti explained the tactical points that led to his side committing unnecessary mistakes. He said:

"On the set-plays we need to do better. We need to apply more pressure and more markers in the box,

"At Wigan, we made the same mistake for the first goal. And we have to work to improve the situation because it's important.

"We have a lot of very good jumpers, like Didier Drogba, John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, and we have to pay more attention, with more concentration in the box.

"We have worked on the set-plays but have to maintain focus.

"There are things we can improve and set-plays are one of these."

He continued:

"We gave United a chance to get in front of us and it is three points dropped unnecessarily.”

Indeed, the Blues need to bounce back in the Premiership. They are one point off the leaders Manchester United and only two points ahead of Tottenham who welcome Stoke City on Saturday as well.

After convincingly beating Atletico de Madrid 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League on Wednesday, Chelsea are poised to recover from their 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa last weekend with an overwhelming victory at home to Blackburn Rovers.

Statistics show Blackburn as the third team to possess the worst defense in the English Premier League so far this season.

Marc Hughes former club have conceded as much as seventeen goals in only eight games and they’ve succumbed to four defeats already.

But last week’s hard-fought 3-2 win against Burnley carried them three points above the drop zone. Former Chelsea player, Franco Di Santo, was on the scoring sheet. Should he play on Saturday, he will have the opportunity to score against the Blues.

But will he be able to break John Terry’s defense and offer Blackburn Rovers a respectable score line against Chelsea?

In spite of their win against West ham United last week, they have won only three of their total nine matches till now, securing just 12 points. They have not played right up to their potential. Beattie has shown some respite, scoring a double in the last match. Apart from him there hasn’t been that much brilliant play making that they need to earn them straight wins. Great concern lies ahead for the team management as the season progresses into its further stages.

Rangers plan vigorous home response

• FC Steaua Bucureşti provided the opposition on the three previous occasions that Rangers have faced Romanian sides at home in UEFA club competition. Their most recent meeting came in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage, a 1-1 draw at Ibrox.
