Czech Republic v Poland European World Cup qualifier Match Preview

It might be difficult to accept that the Czech Republic may not be present at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Czech Republic in action during a World Cup qualifying gameThings have astonishingly unfolded in Group 3 where Slovakia have the lead at the top of a congested table.

Whereas three points separate second-placed Slovenia from fifth-placed Poland in this six-team grid, five points detach the leaders Slovakia from the rest.

Anxiety and hope will surely reign in the camp of the Czechs ahead of Saturday’s crunch encounter at the Sparta Stadium against Poland.

Czech Republic’s table status and hopes to reach the World Cup finals

Czech Republic have picked only half of the twenty-four possible points from eight matches. The Czechs are two points behind Slovenia and N. Ireland who are second and third respectively, and seven points behind Slovakia who occupy the first spot.

This condition explains that the Czech Republic have absolutely no chances of clinching automatic tickets for the finals of the World Cup in South Africa.

The best they could afford is a play-off place. Six available points are up for grabs but the task to achieve those points is nothing less than difficult.

Czech Republic’s all-important match at home to Poland will turn out as a relief only if they beat their opponents and if Slovenia lose to Slovakia who are almost qualified. Victory against Poland will take the Czechs onto second in the table if other results go their way.

Definitely, Slovakia v Slovenia will be the key thing in the Czech’s fate especially because their fiercest challengers Slovenia will play against pointless San Marino on match-day 10.

Poland’s table status and hopes to reach the World Cup finals

The Poles are virtually out of the finals in South Africa. A 3-0 defeat to Slovenia In September left them far behind the Czechs. It also resulted in the sacking of their former boss Beenhakker.

Poland’s poor run in the European World Cup qualifiers have seen them pick only eleven points from eight games. Throughout these times, the performance of the country’s national team didn’t stop going under criticism.

Certainly, Poland will not reach the promise land but at least, the desire will be there to prevent other teams from going through to the finals.

On Saturday, the Poles could capitalize on the Czech Republic’s internal squad problems to record a rare victory in the year 2009.
