Mexico v El Salvador World Cup qualifier Match Preview
The big deal is that El Tri have the chance of celebrating their passage into the finals of the World Cup in South Africa in front of their home fans.
Mexico analysis: Bad memories can be brushed away
Moments before El Tri restored their pride and fortress with the leadership of Javier Aguirre, the Mexicans played the first leg of this encounter.
At the end of all proceedings, the visitors Mexico were left shattered by a late penalty scored by El Salvador’s Quintanilla.
That meant that Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s converted spot kick at the 70th minute was just not enough for the Mexicans.
This happened back in June this year, before the Gold Cup tournament.
But things have shaped differently with time for Mexico who are now the defending champions of the CONCACAF region.
In fact, Mexico have climbed onto second in the World Cup qualifying table and contrarily to how it looked some months ago, El Tri are on the brink of reaching South Africa 2010.
On Saturday, the Mexicans will have the opportunity to revenge themselves against La Selecta as they will benefit from intense support from the home crowd.
A win for Mexico will definitely see them cement their place in the finals of the World Cup which will take place in South Africa next summer.
El Salvador must kill before they get killed
The mission is so hard for El Salvador now that they seat just above rock-bottomed side Trinidad and Tobago.
El Salvador face the difficult task of beating Mexico away from home if they want to remain in contention.
La Selecta picked up only 8 points from 8 games and they lack 4 points behind Costa Rica who currently occupy the play-off zone.
Managing anything less than a victory over the Mexicans will automatically end El Salvador’s hopes of qualifying to the finals of the World Cup.
Again, even a victory could be far from enough for El Salvador if Costa Rica beat Trinidad & Tobago in another match on Saturday.
Anyway, repeating the success that they achieved against El Tri in June is the only thing that El Salvador will have to do.
However, even if the dream of reaching the World Cup dies on Saturday, pride will live in La Selecta’s spirit as they'll be the first and only side to beat El Tri in Mexico.
