Ukraine v England European World Cup qualifier Match Preview

Group 6 presents an interesting match on Saturday as Ukraine welcome England at the Olympic Stadium.

England's John Terry in action against Ukraine in a World Cup qualifying gameEngland have booked their tickets for the World Cup in South Africa but they are ready to pose a threat to the Ukrainians who have a play-off place at stake.

Group 6 – England, Ukraine, (and Croatia) facts:

England protect a 100% record in the qualifiers. This run was especially emphasized earlier in September with an overwhelming 5-1 victory against Croatia.

The most astonishing thing in the qualifiers is that England have scored as much as 31 goals which gives them a plus 26 goal difference as they’ve conceded only five.

The Three Lions have thus already qualified for the finals of the World Cup but their willingness to maintain their wonderful form and record have let other teams suffer in the table.

The battle for a play-off place is mainly between Croatia and Ukraine but mathematically, Ukraine have the advantage despite being two points behind the Croatians. This is because Croatia have played a game more than Ukraine who have the opportunity of grabbing six good points.

Three losses amid four victories have harmed the Ukrainians who are still uncertain of qualifying for the finals of the World Cup for yet another time.

One of those losses came against England. Whereas Ukraine looked to spoil England’s intact record when Shevchenko scored on 74 minutes to cancel Crouch’s first half opener, things turned around for the group’s leaders thanks to John Terry’s 85th minute winner.

Ukraine expectations and statistical analysis:

On Saturday, the Ukrainians will hope to overturn that result in order to boost their chances of qualifying for South Africa 2010.

They’ll have to make the most of their home advantage and create an upset by clinching all three points. It is certainly a difficult task to accomplish but looking at the table’s statistics, beating England is the best way for Ukraine to seal their place in the play-offs of the European World Cup qualifying zone.

Winning against the Three Lions will put Ukraine on 18 points in the group and should Croatia fail to beat Kazakhstan four days later, then Ukraine will instantly qualify for the play-offs.

Meanwhile, if Croatia win their last match of the campaign, and if Ukraine get anything less than a victory against England, then the Ukrainians’ hopes of booking a play-off place will vanish.

Ukraine need to pick the maximum six points from two games if they want to survive and if they fail to defeat the English, they’ll have to hope that Croatia draw at least.

In fact, Ukraine are in a difficult situation that they can overcome only with determination, potential, and luck.
