Denmark v Sweden European World Cup qualification Match Preview

Two draws against Portugal and Albania respectively deprived Denmark from early celebrations. On Saturday, the Danes will have the chance to qualify for the finals of the World Cup in South Africa when they host Sweden at the Parken Stadion.

Nicklas Bendtner celebrates a goal for his country DenmarkTable status and comparisons

Denmark are the surprise leaders in Group A. The Danes kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a goalless draw away to Hungary but quickly found their rhythm.

They are on 18 points, three clear above second-placed Sweden, thanks to an unbeaten run throughout the campaign so far.

Denmark have the best goal-scoring record in the group with fifteen goals in eight matches – six more than Sweden.

But Sweden possess the best defense in the table with only three goals conceded. Clean sheets against Portugal home and away, Albania away, and Malta in both legs have helped Sweden become the best defensive side in Group A.

Sweden’s only defeat in this World Cup qualifying campaign came against Denmark in earlier this year in June. Apart from this misfortune, the Swedish have mastered late victories against Hungary and Malta to take their tally to four wins out of eight games.

Denmark v Sweden match analysis and explanations

Qualification to the finals of the World Cup in South Africa is inches away from Denmark’s reach. Still, the Danes will not attempt to relax towards the end of the campaign as mathematically, they could lose hold of the first spot.

Any result on Saturday will be enough for Denmark to qualify should Portugal and Hungary draw against each other. Meanwhile, a victory will definitely put them through regardless of what happens in the night’s other match.

For Sweden, a victory over Denmark will give a hot taste to the final match-day in Group A. If the Swedish manage to beat the Danes, then it will be over for both Portugal and Hungary.

Such a result will put Sweden level on points with Denmark but behind the Danes due to the goal difference issue. Consequently, both sides will have to wait until October 14th to know who enjoys automatic qualification and who clinches a play-off place.

The attention will obviously be on two specific stars: strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Nicklas Bendtner. These two players are exceptionally different.

Barcelona’s Ibrahimovic is an experienced footballer who has tasted two World Cup appearances at the international level and a host of trophies at club level.

On the contrary, Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner is a young chap who is benefiting from Arsene Wenger’s trust to perform and grow up on the big platform.

The Gunner is yet to hold a major title between his hands but his wonderful goal scoring form for his country Denmark could see him reach his first ever World Cup finals in his career.
